Backup WAF
When Cloudflare goes down, your website usually goes down with it. I can keep a backup WAF on standby for your website, set up and ready, so you can switch your visitors to it until Cloudflare is back.
At a glance
Who it’s for
Businesses whose website can’t wait out a Cloudflare outage.
What it is
A second WAF for your website, set up ahead of time and kept on standby.
What it covers
Your website only. Not hosting or email.
Who runs it
Me. I build and run it myself, hosted in Australia. It isn’t a third-party product.
Cost
A quoted add-on: the price depends on your expected traffic and setup.
Backup WAF
A second WAF, ready if Cloudflare goes down
Even the biggest providers have outages. On 18 November 2025, a large share of websites behind Cloudflare showed error pages for hours.
The quick fix – taking Cloudflare out of the way – leaves your website with no protection and puts your server’s real address on show. A backup WAF gives you somewhere safer to send your visitors instead.
What you get
- Your TLS certificates, ready in advance
- WAF rules for the OWASP Top 10 and common exploits
- Closed to your traffic until you switch it on
- No caching: it’s a backup, not a second CDN
- Your website only: it doesn’t cover hosting or email
How it works
Ready before you need it
1
Set up
I set it up for your website ahead of time, so there’s nothing to do on the day.
2
On standby
It stays ready but closed to your traffic, so it isn’t another way in the rest of the time.
3
Switch on
If your main provider goes down, you switch it on and your visitors go through it instead.
4
Switch back
When Cloudflare is back, you switch back and the backup closes again.
Good to know
Before you decide
Built and run here
It isn’t a third-party product I resell. I build and run the system myself, and it’s hosted in Australia, so you know who’s looking after it and where your traffic goes.
Cloudflare stays in charge
The backup is deliberately simpler than Cloudflare. It’s there for the hours Cloudflare isn’t, not to replace it.
Do you need one?
For many small businesses, waiting out a rare outage is a fair trade. What happens when Cloudflare goes down helps you decide.
Not hosting or email
It won’t keep your website running if your host goes down, and your email doesn’t go through it.
Could your website wait out a Cloudflare outage? Tell me what’s at stake, and I’ll tell you honestly whether a backup WAF is worth it.
